Dental Bridges in Maitland

A missing tooth is more than a gap. It can change how you chew and speak, and over time the surrounding teeth can drift into the space. At Lorn Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Maitland, a dental bridge fills the gap with a natural-looking replacement tooth that is fixed in place, so it never comes out. This page explains the types of bridge, how a bridge compares with an implant or denture, and what affects the cost. Need to restore a damaged tooth rather than replace a missing one? What is a dental bridge?

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth (called a pontic) to support on either side of the gap. The replacement is colour-matched to your own teeth and fixed permanently, so it looks and works like a natural tooth and you care for it in your mouth rather than taking it out. A bridge also stops the neighbouring teeth tilting into the empty space.

Types of dental bridge

The right type depends on where the gap is and the condition of the teeth around it. At your consultation we examine your mouth and recommend the option that suits you:

  • Traditional bridge: a crown on the healthy tooth each side holds the replacement tooth between them. The most common type, used when there are sound teeth on both sides.
  • Cantilever bridge: anchored to a tooth on one side only, for gaps that have a supporting tooth on just one side.
  • Maryland (resin-bonded) bridge: the replacement tooth is held by thin wings bonded to the backs of the neighbouring teeth. It conserves more of your natural tooth and is often used for front teeth.
  • Implant-supported bridge: for a larger gap, the bridge is anchored to dental implants instead of natural teeth, so the teeth either side are left untouched.

Bridge, implant or denture: which is right for you?

All three replace missing teeth, and the best choice depends on your situation. A bridge is fixed, usually completed in two visits, and does not need surgery. A dental implant replaces the tooth root and leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched, but takes longer and costs more. A denture is removable and can suit several missing teeth at once. We talk you through the trade-offs in plain language so you can decide what fits your mouth, your time and your budget.

How we fit a bridge at our Lorn practice

A bridge is usually a comfortable, two-visit process. We use a 3D scanner instead of old-fashioned putty moulds, so taking the impression is quick and accurate, with none of the gagging.

Your first visit

We numb the area with local anaesthetic and prepare the supporting teeth (or plan the implants for an implant-supported bridge), then take the digital scan. You go home with a temporary bridge while your custom one is made in the lab.

Your second visit

We remove the temporary, check the fit, bite and shade of your new bridge, and bond it in place. We make sure there are no micro-gaps under the replacement tooth that could trap food or shorten how long the bridge lasts. Most people are back to eating normally the same day.

What dental bridges cost in Maitland

Dental bridges at our Lorn practice start from $4,500. The final cost depends on the type, how many teeth are being replaced, the materials, and whether any other treatment is needed first, so we give you a written quote after your assessment and you know the full cost before any treatment starts. If you have private health cover with dental extras, bridges are often eligible for a rebate, and we can help you check. Payment plans are available.

Caring for your bridge

A bridge lasts longest when the supporting teeth and gums stay healthy. Brush twice a day and, importantly, clean under the replacement tooth every day using a floss threader, superfloss or a small interdental brush, so food and plaque do not build up where a normal floss cannot reach. Keep your regular checkups so we can check the bridge and the teeth supporting it.

Why Maitland patients choose Lorn Family and Cosmetic Dentistry

Our Lorn practice welcomes patients from across Maitland and the Hunter Valley, including East Maitland, Rutherford, Bolwarra, Thornton and Ashtonfield, with parking at the door and appointment times that fit around work and school. We use digital scanning so bridge work is precise and comfortable, and we explain every option, and its cost, in plain language before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Are dental bridges right for me?

A bridge suits many people with one or a few missing teeth and healthy teeth or implants to support it. At your consultation we check the gap and surrounding teeth and recommend a bridge, implant or denture depending on what fits best.

How long does a dental bridge last?

With good cleaning and regular checkups, bridges commonly last many years. How long depends on the type, the health of the supporting teeth and your daily care under the replacement tooth.

Is getting a bridge painful?

We prepare the teeth under local anaesthetic, so the appointment itself is comfortable. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a day or two.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Yes. Because a bridge is fixed in place, most people eat normally soon after it is fitted. It is sensible to ease into very hard or sticky foods at first.

Will a bridge look natural?

The replacement tooth is colour-matched to your own teeth and shaped to suit your smile, so it blends in. We check the shade and shape with you before bonding it in place.

Bridge or implant: which is better?

Neither is "better" for everyone. A bridge is faster and does not need surgery; an implant leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched and replaces the root, but takes longer and costs more. We help you weigh both for your situation.
