A damaged, worn or decayed tooth affects how you eat, speak and feel about your smile. At Lorn Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Maitland, we use crowns to rebuild and protect teeth that are too damaged for a simple filling. This page explains what a crown is, how we fit it at our Lorn practice, and what affects the cost. Replacing a whole missing tooth instead? See our dental bridges in Maitland page.
What is a dental crown?
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. It covers the whole visible part of the tooth above the gum. Dentists use crowns to:
- Protect a tooth weakened by a large filling or a crack, so the remaining natural tooth is preserved
- Rebuild a tooth damaged by injury or decay back to normal function
- Cover and protect a tooth after root canal treatment, which can leave it weaker and more vulnerable to fracture
- Improve the look of a discoloured or misshapen tooth
Most crowns are made from porcelain or zirconia. Both are strong, and porcelain can be colour-matched to your surrounding teeth so the crown blends in.
When you might need a crown
A crown is often the right option when a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling but still has a healthy root. Common signs include a cracked or fractured tooth, a tooth with a very large old filling, a tooth that has had root canal treatment, or a tooth worn down by grinding. At your appointment we assess whether a crown, a filling or another option suits your situation, and explain the trade-offs before you decide.
How we fit a crown at our Lorn practice
Getting a crown is a comfortable, two-visit process. We use a 3D scanner instead of old-fashioned putty moulds, so taking the impression is quick and accurate, with none of the gagging. From that scan we 3D-print a prototype, so you can see the planned result before your final crown is made.
Your first visit
We numb the tooth with local anaesthetic, gently prepare it so the crown will fit, and take the digital scan. You go home with a temporary crown protecting the tooth while your custom one is made in the lab.
Your second visit
We remove the temporary, check the fit, shade and bite of your new crown, and bond it in place. We make small adjustments until your bite feels natural. Most people are back to eating normally the same day.
What dental crowns cost in Maitland
Dental crowns at our Lorn practice start from $1,900. The final cost depends on the material chosen, the tooth involved, and whether any other treatment (such as a filling or root canal) is needed first, so we give you a written quote after your assessment and you know the full cost before any treatment starts. If you have private health cover with dental extras, crowns are often eligible for a rebate, and we can help you check. Payment plans are available.
Caring for your crown
A crown looks after itself much like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, and keep your regular checkups so we can catch any issues early. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or grinding helps your crown last longer; if you grind in your sleep, ask us about a night guard.
Why Maitland patients choose Lorn Family and Cosmetic Dentistry
Our Lorn practice welcomes patients from across Maitland and the Hunter Valley, including East Maitland, Rutherford, Bolwarra, Thornton and Ashtonfield, with parking at the door and appointment times that fit around work and school. We invest in digital scanning and printing so crown work is precise and comfortable, and we explain every option in plain language before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Is getting a crown painful?
We prepare the tooth under local anaesthetic, so the appointment itself is comfortable. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a day or two.
How long do dental crowns last?
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, crowns commonly last many years. How long depends on the material, the tooth's position and habits like grinding.
What are crowns made of?
We mainly use porcelain and zirconia. Both are strong, and porcelain can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth.
Will my tooth be filed down for a crown?
To fit a crown over a tooth we gently reshape it so the crown sits flush and looks natural. This is done under local anaesthetic, and we remove only as much as needed. If a tooth is already badly broken, there is often little reshaping required.
Crown or filling: which do I need?
A filling repairs a smaller area of damage; a crown is used when more of the tooth is missing or weakened and needs full coverage. We assess your tooth and recommend the option that protects it best.
How many appointments does a crown take?
Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and take the digital scan, and one to fit the finished crown.
Can a dental crown be replaced?
Yes. If a crown chips, wears or comes loose after many years, it can be replaced. We check your crowns at your regular visits so any issue is caught early.
