A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay or a small chip, restoring its shape and function. At Lorn Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Maitland we use tooth-coloured (composite) fillings that are matched to your natural tooth, so the repair blends in. This page explains when you need a filling, how we place one, and how white fillings compare with older silver ones.
What is a white filling?
A white filling is made from a tooth-coloured composite material that is bonded into the tooth and shaped to match. It restores a tooth affected by decay or minor damage, and because it is colour-matched, it is far less noticeable than a silver filling. White fillings can be used on both front and back teeth.
When you might need a filling
- A cavity caused by decay, often found at a checkup before it causes pain
- A small chip or crack in a tooth
- Worn areas of a tooth
- Replacing an old or failing silver filling
Catching decay early usually means a simpler, smaller filling, which is one of the reasons regular checkups matter.
How we place a filling at our Lorn practice
We numb the area where needed so you are comfortable, gently remove the decay or damaged part of the tooth, then bond the composite in place, building it up and shaping it to match your tooth. Finally we check your bite and polish the filling. Most fillings are completed in a single visit.
White fillings or silver fillings?
White composite fillings are bonded to the tooth and colour-matched, so they look natural and can often preserve more of the healthy tooth. Older silver (amalgam) fillings are still durable, but they are visible and do not bond to the tooth in the same way. Many people choose to replace visible silver fillings with white ones for appearance.
What fillings cost in Maitland
White fillings at our Lorn practice start from $250. The final cost depends on the size and position of the filling. We let you know the cost before we start, and private health cover with dental extras often contributes.
When a filling is not enough
If a tooth is heavily decayed or broken, a filling may not be strong enough to last, and a crown may be recommended instead to protect it. If decay has reached the nerve, a root canal may be needed first. We always explain why we recommend one option over another.

Frequently asked questions
Is getting a filling painful?
We numb the area where needed, so the appointment is comfortable. Any mild sensitivity afterwards usually settles quickly.
Can a filling be done in one visit?
Most fillings are completed in a single appointment.
How long do white fillings last?
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, white fillings last many years. How long depends on the size and position of the filling and your bite.
Can I replace my silver fillings with white ones?
In many cases, yes. People often replace visible silver fillings with white ones for appearance. We can check your fillings and let you know your options.
Will my tooth be sensitive after a filling?
Some short-term sensitivity to hot or cold is normal and usually settles within a few days. If it lingers, let us know.
